When we get a cancellation, we have to take advantage!

I have been dying for a haircut lately 🥲 I had to cancel my last haircut when Mabel was sick so the last haircut I had was from @khloeshairstudio in Miami when I spontaneously took my extensions out. That was October!

Usually when we have a cancellation that we don’t fill, I let Brecklynn sleep in 🤪 or we work on some additional trainings. Yesterday I convinced her to come in and trim up all my sad split ends.

We’ve been having a handful of clients going darker lately! 🤎

For a long time I was well known for having clients that were BLONDE blonde. It was a big joke in the break room whenever a platinum blonde client was waiting up front she must be there to see me 🤣

And don’t get me wrong, I love getting lost in a head of foils, but one of the things I truly love is helping clients *enhance* their natural color rather than fully changing it.

There is something really beautiful about the journey to accepting your natural tones and working with them rather than against them 🫶

Brecklynn and I have now spent a full month in our little suite and are getting used to where everything is (**If you missed this in my stories I am still at Fresh we just have our own private space!!**) I have been so busy I have been awful about sending out an email announcement but I can’t wait for you all to see it 🩷

I celebrated another year around the sun. 33 feels good so far 💁🏼‍♀️

I’m really working on my own gratitude practice and I created a gratitude bulletin board for clients to add to in the salon. It has been so fun so far! I think I may switch it up to affirmations in the new year ✨

I hope everyone had a wonderful Thanksgiving. With the holidays ahead, I know things always get so busy! I’m trying to take in the little moments when I can. It’s hard but I’m constantly practicing.

I also hope you all know how grateful I am for each of you that’s in my life. Whether it’s in real life, or just on this silly little app. Whether you are a new client, a long time client, or a client who no longer comes in. August is typically my slowest month in the salon, which makes for a lot of fun memories at home 🥰

I think August gets quiet because everyone else is planning for the start of school and taking their last minute summer trips before reality sets in, so I try to take advantage of my slow weeks while I can!

I had a mom’s night out in Bellingham, we did a day trip to Deception Pass, and a long weekend in Orcas Island!

In between, we spent lots of time outside. Mabel is working on her balance bike skills, and in the evenings all the kids come out to play and we have to coolest neighborhood gang of 2-4 year olds!

I am so not ready for summer to end 🥲

I wish I had a before pic to really show off how much better extensions blend when the color is just right 🥲 so you’ll just have to trust me

And I can speak from experience on this!

A few months ago, I had new extensions installed but I *FORGOT* to schedule time to color my own frickin extensions before my appointment with Sara 🤦🏼‍♀️🫣

They blended fine…as long as I wore my hair down and the wind didn’t blow around too much 😅

Fast forward to last week, I took my extensions out so that I could color them before my install. All extension wearers understand how hard it is to go a whole week without your hair….but it was a necessity.

Now that they are properly rooted, low lighted, and toned I don’t have to worry about how they look throughout the day.

No “are they showing???” anxiety over here 🙅‍♀️

I honestly feel so much more comfortable and confident!

So don’t skip this important step. Extensions will fade over time, and if you’re having a hard time blending them it may be time to freshen up the color 🎨

Just a little peak of what I’ve been up to in the many months I haven’t posted 🤪

I recently went through and unfollowed HUNDREDS of accounts on Instagram. Like, over 500 🤯

I am truly so tired of opening this app up and immediately feeling like everyone is trying to sell something or making me feel like I should somehow be doing MORE or doing what I do BETTER.

It’s exhausting 😅 and I easily get so sucked in to feeling like an imposter as soon as I start to put together a post. How am I supposed to keep up with all of these people that seem like they are so much better than me?

So I unfollowed them 🤣

It’s easy to get swept up in the pressure of making beautiful social media posts when really all I care about is connecting with my clients and helping them feel confident 🫶

What we were up to in March:

I was a bit slower in the salon which ended up working out for the best. Paul had a last minute work trip so the first week of March was just us girls 👯‍♀️

My mom came out for a visit and the sun was out the whole time so we had a blast! Paul and I even got a date night but we took zero pictures so there’s no evidence 😂

I got to meet 3 new clients this month which is always a special treat!

Mabel has really started talking in sentences this past month which is so fun. She’s also so freaking tall I had to move her up to some 3T clothes already 🥲 can’t believe she’s going to be 2 next month!!

I got to do my moms hair last week 🫶

It’s honestly such a treat! Now that my mom comes to visit her grand daughter all the time 😝 she can get her hair done with me more consistently!

I prefer to do hair in the salon instead of at home and my poor mom hasn’t been up to visit since august (even though I’ve seen her three times since then!) so we have to keep her hair low maintenance!

We usually do some highs and lows to give her some dimension and keep her blonde feeling bright instead of “mousey” (her word not mine 😂)

After, we usually have time to go to lunch and do some shopping 🥰 this time we opted for @oxfordsaloonandeatery for lunch, did some damage at a few of my favorite shops @annamariecreativecollective and @one_common_ , and then dropped into @kasiastable for a tasting 🥂

We just dropped her back off at the airport today 🥲 but she’ll be back in less than 2 months for Mabel’s 2nd birthday!

How often should you get a full color? 🪄

If you want a lot of dimension in your hair, I suggest 1-2x a year with face frame or partial foils in between (my Refresh or Maintain color packages)

If you want to be BLONDE blonde and are already getting your foils done every 8 weeks, maybe 3x per year (that’s every other appointment, btw)

Personally, I don’t think it’s necessary to have a full foil done every appointment unless you are usually going 6+ months between appointments!

Sometimes, less is more 😍

How often are you doing a full color service? Do you think you need to cut back or are you not doing it often enough 😂

Have you ever been told to take advil for your extension install?

This is one of the biggest red flags out there for me.

Your extensions should not hurt on day 1, or ANY day!

Pain is a sign that too much stress is being put on your scalp. And stress can = traction alopecia AKA your hair falling out 😱

You may notice some discomfort your first night sleeping, because when you aren’t used to having extensions on your head it can feel a little weird to lay on them! It should never move past discomfort to the point you need to take medication and it should not disrupt your sleep.

A dimensional highlight is going to look different based on the color you’re starting with!

With a darker base, you will be able to see a lot more contrast. This means the highlights will stand out more against the natural shadow of your dark hair

If you’re starting off with a lighter color, that shadow won’t be as dark so it’s easy for your highlights to feel too blended or lost!

Pay attention to this when you’re looking at your inspiration photos and take into consideration how many highlights you already have.

If you’re already feeling pretty blonde, you might want to be open to adding some lowlights in to give your blonde something to pop against

Also, less is more when you’re already blonde! If you put too many highlights in there, you’re going to lose that natural depth.

Same goes for maintenance, less may be better! Opt for a face frame foil or toner every 6-8 weeks and stretch out the length of time between full color appointments.

More tidbits you might want to know ⬇️

1️⃣ Neglecting the filter on your blowdryer will drastically cut its lifespan down! It needs a constant supply of clean air to keep from overheating. I clean the filter on my Dyson in the salon weekly and my AirWrap at home every 1-2 months. Add it to your chore list!   2️⃣ Products do not have an infinite shelf life!! Chances are, if you’ve had it for more than a year, you need to toss that shit. On the back of your products (near the ingredients, usually) you’ll see a little symbol that looks like a jar opening with “6M” “12M” etc. This means your products are best if used within 6 months/12months of opening. The ingredients will degrade over time with exposure to air and you might start to feel like they are less effective or have a funky smell. This is another reason I love the “less is more” approach to hair care, I try to only keep a few things on hand so I always use up what I have.

3️⃣ Brushes are a commonly overlooked tool! I recommend buying a new one every year. Damage to the bristles of your brush can cause damage to your hair and scalp. You should also be cleaning them out regularly! (Add that to your checklist with your blowdryer filter).

When you get extensions installed with me the very first time, I want to make sure you are set up for success!

Here is a sneak peek of what all first-time extension clients get when they book a new install.

NOUNOU Shampoo + Conditioner are my favorite from Davines. I’ve been using them in my own hair for years and they feel so great in my extensions. They have a very subtle smell and provide a lot of moisture and softness without ever feeling too heavy. It is always my go-to recommendation because I have never come across someone whose hair hasn’t love it

OI Hair Butter and Oil are always included as well! The hair butter makes a great deep conditioner, and the oil is great to use wet or dry. It has UV and heat protection and I put a little on my hair every night before bed to keep it hydrated

I also include an extension friendly hair brush, and a detangler/leave-in product. Right now I’m loving Kevin.Murphy’s Un.Tangled but this product might change a bit depending on what I’m loving at the moment and what I feel will best serve my client.

It’s not often I get the chance to show off short extensions!

I only have two clients that wear extensions in truly short hair (cutting 2 inches off your 14 inch extensions doesn’t count as short, sorry 🤣)

A little bit of hair can actually make a whole lot of difference to your short style!

For Karaline, we added just two wefts of extensions to her bob. This not only helps to add some density to her naturally fine hair, it also gives us more freedom to add texture and layers!

If you like to have short hair but have ever thought:

1. Purple shampoo can not make your hair lighter
2. Washing your hair every day isn’t great, but neither is not washing often enough
3. You should be trimming your hair every 2 months

Things I want every client to know:

Purple shampoo cannot remove pigment, it’s just shampoo. It does, however, DEPOSIT pigment. Overuse can actually make your hair darker 😩

It’s rare to see someone who washes daily anymore, but did you know going long periods of time can be worse? Your scalp needs to stay clean to continue producing healthy hair, and your ends need the moisture you get from conditioner. Shoot for 2x a week!

Trims are good! You don’t need a full chop every 2 months but a little clean up can go a long way in making your style feel fresh (and it will be easier to brush through!)

I'm not sure if you know this but....

WARM tones are getting so popular right now!

I am loving this trend for so many reasons:

☀️ warm colors are naturally flattering on most people

☀️ the underlying pigment in everyone's hair is yellow/orange/red so by embracing the warm pigments we can work with our hair instead of against it!

☀️ blondes with warm undertones actually appear LIGHTER because they reflect more light

☀️ you save $$ and space in your shower because you won't need purple shampoo 😂🤷‍♀️

Don't get me wrong, there is a difference in GOLDEN blonde and YELLOW 😅

The blondes of the 90s and 00s were cringey because toner wasn't as widely used. Even when I went to beauty school in 2011 we were RARELY ever using a toner 🥴

Now, I use a toner with every single blonde service. We can embrace and enhance those golden tones without letting them run around unchecked 😅😂

Do you know what to expect out of the life of your extensions?

Aside from damage to the weft of the extensions, your hair will need to be replaced in about 9-12 months from normal wear and tear.

As you wear them, you'll notice the color will start to fade, the hair will get shorter and maybe even a bit thinner, and they might start to turn really warm.

It's important to remember that these extensions already lived a life on someone else's head! Weird to think about, I know, but this hair may be new to you but it's actually already at least a few years old.

The best way you can help ensure you get the longest life out of your extensions is by:

🌿 refreshing the color regularly
🌿 using all the recommended products at home
🌿 checking with your stylist before using new products
🌿 tossing any sunscreen that has avobenzone (check your skincare products too!)
🌿 using a filter on your shower to reduce mineral buildup
🌿 making sure you are using plenty of hydrating products

So far, my extensions are still going strong at 10 months! I have cut a few inches off and I don't mind the warmer tones, so I have that working for me 😉 and I'm hoping to get another 2-3 months with them!

Laughing
Running less than 5 minutes late (10 on Fridays because of parking )

This list could go on for a while, but hopefully you get the point

I had the pleasure of doing my friend and co-worker @cayleygove’s hair the other day and unintentionally captured this moment

Losing your hair (whether it’s postpartum or for another reason) can be traumatizing! It can make you feel hopeless, and even like you are going a liiiiittle 🤏 crazy 🫣

Cayley’s baby is 15 months old, so the process of all this hair growing back is definitely not fast. But here is the proof that it’s definitely coming back strong!

Not everyone loses hair this dramatically, and for some it grows back more gradually rather than all at once. Some people don’t notice any changes in their hair after giving birth!

Leave a 🫶 in the comments if you had to go through this process with your kids! I think it’s much more common than people realize ❤️

I really didn’t understand the term “overstimulation” until I became a mom

That’s my goal for you in the salon: I want you to really be able to take a break from the chaos

Even when it’s a little loud in here with the blowdryers going and other clients talking, can you take a moment to yourself? To really tune in and turn off your brain?

It is so much easier said than done!

Often, I have clients in the chair getting work done, coordinating kids’ schedules, ordering groceries…it never ends!

But I want to encourage you next time you’re in the salon: bring your headphones and take a few minutes to yourself! You are never required to keep me entertained, and those few minutes may be the only calm time you get!

When I feel the need for a break, I like to sit in my car in silence after work before daycare pickup. It helps me center myself before what I know will be a crazy dinnertime (why are the hours of 5pm-7pm the most hectic 😅😅)
